time afterward David attacked the Philistines and subdued them, and he captured Metheg-ammah from the control of the Philistines.

He also defeated the Moabites. He made them lie down on the ground and measured them off with a length of cord. He measured off two cord lengths of those who were to be put to death, and one length for those who were to be allowed to live. So the Moabites became subject to David and brought tribute.

David also defeated Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah, when he went to restore his control along the Euphrates River.  4  David captured seventeen hundred horsemen and twenty thousand foot soldiers from him, and he hamstrung all the chariot horses, except for a hundred he retained.

When the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer, king of Zobah, David killed twenty-two thousand of the Aramean men.  6  Then he stationed garrisons in Aram of Damascus, and the Arameans became subject to David and brought tribute. The Lord gave David victory wherever he went.

David took the gold shields of the officers of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem.  8  From Betah and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, King David captured a great quantity of bronze.

When King Toi of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer,  10  he sent his son Joram to King David to greet him and congratulate him on his victory, for Toi had been at war with Hadadezer. Joram brought with him articles of silver, gold, and bronze.

King David dedicated these articles to the Lord, along with the silver and gold he had dedicated from all the nations he had subdued:  12  from Edom, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines, Amalek, and the spoil of Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah.

And David gained a powerful reputation when he returned from striking down eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.

He put garrisons throughout Edom he put garrisons, and all the Edomites became subject to David. The Lord gave David victory wherever he went.

David’s Administration

So David reigned over all Israel, and he administered justice and righteousness for all his people.  16  Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army; and Jehoshiphat son of Ahilud was recorder;  17  Zadok son of Ahilud and Ahimelech son of Abiathar were priests; Seraiah was secretary;  18  Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were chief officials.
