they came to the other side the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes. 2 As soon as Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came from the tombs to meet Him. 3 The man lived among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains. 4 For he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but the chains he had wrenched apart, and the shackles he had broken in pieces; and no one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 Night and day he was among the tombs and in the mountains, crying out and cutting himself with stones.
When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran over and knelt down before Him. 7 Then he shouted with a loud voice, “What do You have to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You before God, do not torment me.” 8 For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!”
Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
“My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.” 10 And he begged Jesus earnestly that He would not send them out of the region.
Now a large herd of pigs was feeding on the hillside nearby. 12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us into the pigs, that we may enter into them.” 13 So He gave them permission, and the unclean spirits came out and entered into the pigs. Then the herd, numbering about two thousand, ran violently down the steep bank into the sea and drowned there.
The men who were tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and the countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were all afraid. 16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. 17 Then the people began begging Jesus to leave their region.
As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged that he might be with Him. 19 But Jesus would not let him, but said to him, “Go home to your own people, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how He has had mercy on you.” 20 So the man went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him; and all the people were amazed.
When Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered about Him while He was beside the sea. 22 Then one of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came there, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at His feet 23 and pleaded with Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” 24 So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed and was pressing around Jesus.
Now there was a certain woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, 26 and she had suffered much under many doctors and had spent all that she had. However, she had not become better, but rather grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind Him in the crowd and touched His robe, 28 because she thought, “If I can only touch His clothes, I will be made well.” 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped, and she felt in her body that she had been healed of her affliction.
At once Jesus, knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched Me?”
His disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around You, and yet You ask, ‘Who touched Me?’ ”
So Jesus was looking around to see who had done this. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be freed from your affliction.”
While Jesus was still speaking, people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler, and they said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”
But when Jesus heard the report, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid; only believe.”
He did not allow anyone to follow Him, except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. 38 As they came to the house of the synagogue ruler, Jesus saw a commotion, with people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 When He went inside the house, He said to them, “Why do you make all this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but asleep.” 40 But they laughed at Him.
After He had put them all outside, He took the child’s father and mother and those who were with Him, and entered the place where the child was. 41 He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). 42 Immediately the girl got up and walked around (she was twelve years old). At this they were overcome with amazement. 43 He strictly ordered them that no one should know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
