the Lord your God brings you into the land that you are about to enter and possess, and He drives out many nations before you—the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, seven nations larger and stronger than you— 2 and when the Lord your God delivers them over to you and you defeat them, then you must completely destroy them. You must not make any treaties with them, and show them no mercy. 3 Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons, or take their daughters for your sons, 4 for they will turn your sons away from following Me to worship other gods. Then the anger of the Lord will burn against you, and He will swiftly destroy you. 5 This is how you must deal with them: Break down their altars, smash their sacred pillars, cut down their Asherah poles, and burn up their carved images with fire. 6 For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be His own treasured possession above all the peoples on the face of the earth.
7 “The Lord did not choose you and lavish His favour on you because you were more numerous than any other people, for you were the fewest of all peoples. 8 But it was because the Lord loves you and kept the oath He swore to your fathers, He brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of enslavers, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9 Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps His gracious covenant and His faithful love for a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commands. 10 But
those who hate Him He will repay back to their own face by destroying them;
He will not be slow to directly pay back to their face those who hate Him.
11 “Therefore, you must be careful to obey the commands, statutes, and ordinances that I am giving you today.
12 “If you pay attention to these ordinances and are careful to follow them, the Lord your God will keep His covenant of faithful love with you, as He swore to your fathers. 13 He will love you, bless you, and multiply you. He will bless the fruit of your womb and the produce of your land—your grain and your new wine and your oil, and the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks, in the land that He swore your forefathers that He would give you.
14 “You will be blessed above all peoples; there will be no men or women none of your men or women will be infertile among you or among your livestock. 15 The Lord will remove all sickness from you. He will not inflict on you any of the terrible diseases of Egypt that you have known, but He will lay them on all who hate you. 16 You must destroy all the peoples the Lord your God is delivering over to you. Do not look on them with pity or serve their gods, for that will be a snare to you.
17 “You may say to yourselves, ‘These nations are greater than I; how can I drive them out?’ 18 But do not be afraid of them. Just be sure to remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt. 19 You saw with your own eyes the great trials, the signs and wonders, the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm, by which the Lord your God brought you out. The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples of whom you are now afraid. 20 Moreover, the Lord your God will send the hornet against them until even the survivors and those who hide themselves from you have perished. 21 Do not be terrified of them, for the Lord your God, the great and awesome God, is among you.
22 “The Lord your God will drive out those nations before you, little by little. You will not be able to destroy them all at once, otherwise, the wild animals will become too numerous for you. 23 But the Lord your God will deliver them over to you, and throw them into great confusion until they are destroyed. 24 He will give their kings into your hand, and you will wipe out their names from under the heavens. No one will be able to stand against you, until you have destroyed them. 25 You must burn the images of their gods with fire. Do not covet the silver or the gold on the idols and take it for yourself, or you will become ensnared by it, for it is abhorrent to the Lord your God. 26 You must not bring any detestable thing into your house, or you will be set apart for destruction, like it is. You must utterly detest and abhor it, for it is set apart for destruction.
