Deuteronomy Chapter 8

Remember the Lord

1
“YOU

must be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase, and may enter and take possession of the land the Lord promised on oath to your forefathers.  2  Remember how the Lord your God led you on the long journey these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep His commands.

3 “He humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known,

“So that you might learn that:

Man does not live on bread alone:
but man lives according to every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

4“Your clothes did not wear out, and your feet did not swell these forty years.  5  Know then in your heart that as the man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.

6“So keep the commands of the Lord your God, by walking in His ways and fearing Him.  7  For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land with streams and deep pools of water, and of fountains and springs, flowing forth in the valleys and hills;  8  a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey;  9  a land where you will eat bread without shortage, where you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can mine copper from the hills.  10  When you have eaten and are satisfied, then you will bless the Lord your God for the good land that He has given you.

11  “Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, and fail to keep His commands, His ordinances, and His statutes that I am giving you this day.  12  Otherwise, when you have eaten and are satisfied, when you have built fine houses and live in them,  13  and when your herds and your flocks grow large and your silver and your gold increase, and all that you have is multiplied,  14  then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God who brought out of the land of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.  15  He led you through the vast and terrible wilderness, with its venomous snakes and scorpions in a thirsty and waterless land. He brought water for you from out of the hard flinty rock.  16  He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your fathers had never known, so that He might humble you and test you, and so that it would do you good in the end.  17  You may say to yourself, ‘My power and the strength of my own hands have gained this wealth for me’,  18  but remember that it is the Lord your God who gives you the ability to gain wealth, and He is confirming His covenant that He swore to your forefathers, as it is today.

19  “But if you ever forget the Lord your God and go after other gods to worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will certainly perish.  20  Like the nations the Lord is about to destroy before you, you will also perish if you do not obey the Lord your God.”
