word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Write in a book all the words that I have spoken to you. 3 For the days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will bring back from captivity My people Israel and Judah,” declares the Lord. “And I will cause them to return with to the land that I gave to their forefathers, and they will possess it.”
4 These are the words the Lord spoke concerning Israel and Judah.
5 “This is what the Lord says:
‘We have heard cries of panic,
of terror, and not of peace.
6 Ask now and see:
Can a man give birth to a child?
So why do I see every man
with hands on his stomach like a woman in labour,
and every face turned pale?
7 Alas! For that day is so great,
there will be none like it!
It will be a time of trouble of Jacob,
but he will be saved out of it.
8 ‘It will come to pass on that day’,
declares the Lord of Hosts,
‘that I will break his yoke from off your neck,
and I will tear off your bonds;
so strangers will never enslave him again.
9 Instead, they will serve the Lord their God,
and David their king,
whom I will raise up for them.
10 ‘So do not fear, O Jacob, My servant’,
declares the Lord;
‘and do not be dismayed, O Israel,
for I am going to deliver you from far away;
your descendants, from the land of their captivity.
Jacob will return and have peace and quiet,
and no one will make him afraid.
11 For I am with you to save you’,
declares the Lord.
‘Though I will destroy the nations
among which I have scattered you,
but of you I will not make an end.
I will discipline you in just measure,
for I will by no means let you go unpunished’.
12 “For this is what the Lord says:
‘Your wound is incurable;
your injury is grievous.
13 There is no one to plead your cause;
no medicine for your sores;
no healing for you.
14 All your lovers have forgotten you;
they care nothing for you;
for I have struck you like an enemy would,
the punishment of a cruel foe,
because of your enormous guilt,
and the multitude of your sins.
15 Why do you cry about your wound?
Your pain is incurable!
I have done these things to you
because of your many sins.
16 ‘But even so, all who devour you will be devoured;
and all your enemies—everyone of them—
will go into captivity.
Those who plunder you will also be plundered,
and all who prey upon you will also be preyed upon.
17 But I will restore you to health,
and heal you of your wounds’,
declares the Lord,
‘because they call you “The Outcast:
Zion, that no one cares about”!’ ”
18 “This is what the Lord says:
‘Behold, I will restore the fortune of Jacob’s tents,
and have compassion on his dwellings;
the city will be rebuilt upon its own mound,
and each citadel will stand at its rightful place.
19 Thanksgiving will proceed from out of them,
and the sound of rejoicing.
I will multiply them,
and they will not decrease;
I will honour them,
and they will not be disdained.
20 Their children will be as in days past,
and their congregation will be established before Me.
I will punish all who oppress them.
21 Their leaders will come from among them,
and their ruler will come from their midst.
I will cause him to draw near,
and he will approach Me;
for who is this that engaged his heart
to approach Me?’
declares the Lord.
‘So you will be My people,
and I will be your God’.”
23 Behold, the storm of the Lord!
Wrath has gone forth—
a violent whirlwind,
swirling down on the head of the wicked!
24 The fierce anger of the Lord will not turn back
until He has fully accomplished the purposes of His heart.
In the latter days you will understand this.
