word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh conquered Gaza:
2 This is what the Lord says:
“Behold, waters are rising in the north;
they will become a raging torrent.
They will overflow the land and everything in it,
the cities and those who live in them.
Then men will cry out;
all the inhabitants of the land will wail.
3 At the clatter of the stomping hooves of his stallions,
at the noise of his chariots,
and at the rumbling of their wheels,
fathers will not turn back for their children,
for their hands will go feeble.
4 For the day that is coming
for the destruction of all the Philistines,
and to cut off from Tyre and Sidon
every single last ally.
For the Lord will destroy the Philistines,
the remnant from the coasts of Caphtor.
5 The shaving of heads is coming to Gaza,
Ashkelon will be made silent.
O remnant of their valley,
how long will you gash yourself?
6 “Ah, sword of the Lord!
How long until you rest?
Put yourself back into your scabbard;
cease and be still!
7 But how can it rest,
when the Lord has given it a command?
For He has appointed it
against Ashkelon and against the coastlands.”
