Joshua Chapter 11

Northern Kings Defeated

1
WHEN

Jabin king of Hazor heard of this, he sent word to: Jobab king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, to the king of Achshaph;  2  and to the kings in the northern highlands, in the Arabah south of Chinneroth, in the Judean foothills, in Naphoth-dor on the west;  3  to the Canaanites in the east and west, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites in the hill country, and the Hivites at the foot of Hermon in the land of Mizpah.  4  They went out with all their troopsan army so large, they were like the sand on the seashore, with a vast number of horses and chariots.  5  When all these kings met together, they joined their forces and made camp at the waters at Merom to fight against Israel.

6 The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, for tomorrow at this time I will deliver all of them over to Israel, slain. You are to hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.”

7 So Joshua and all the warriors with him came against them suddenly at the waters of Merom, and attacked them.  8  The Lord delivered them into the hand of Israel. They struck them down, and pursued them as far as Great Sidon and Misrephoth-maim, and the Mizpeh Valley to the east. They struck them down until no survivors were left.  9  Joshua did to them as the Lord had told him; he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots.

10  At that time Joshua turned back and captured Hazor, and he struck down its king with the sword. Before that time Hazor had been the head of all those kingdoms.  11  They struck down all the people who were in it with the sword, completely destroying them; there was no one left breathing, and he burned Hazor with fire.

12  Joshua captured all the cities of those kings, and all their kings, and struck them down with the sword, completely destroying them, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded.  13  Yet Israel did not burn any of the cities that stood on mounds, except Hazor alone, which Joshua burned.  14  the Israelites took all the spoil of these cities and the cattle for themselves; and they stuck down every man with the sword until they had destroyed them, and they left no one breathing.  15  As the Lord had commanded Moses His servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.

Joshua’s Conquests

16  So Joshua took all this land: The hill country, all the Negev, the whole land of Goshen, the Judean foothills, the Arabah, and the hill country of Israel with its foothills,  17  from Mount Halak, which rises towards Seir, as far as Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon at the foot of Mount Hermon. He captured all their kings and struck them down, putting them to death.  18  Joshua waged war against all those kings for a long time.  19  No city made peace with the Israelites except the Hivites, the people of Gibeon. All of the others were taken in battle.  20  For the Lord Himself hardened their hearts, so they would come against Israel in battle. Then He could destroy them without mercy and annihilate them, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

21  At that time Joshua went and wiped out the Anakim from the hill countryfrom Hebron, Debir, and Anab, all the hill country of Judah, and all the hill country of Israel. Joshua completely destroyed them and their cities.  22  None of the Anakim were left in the land of the Israelites, except for some in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod.  23  So Joshua took the entire land, in keeping with all that the Lord had said to Moses. Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their tribal divisions.

Then the land had rest from war.
