The Book of Joshua

Joshua Chapter 13

Land Still to be Conquered

1
NOW

Joshua was old and advanced in years; and the Lord said to him, “You are old and advanced in years, and there remains very large areas of land that are still to be possessed.

2“This is the land that remains: All the regions of the Philistines and those of the Geshurites:  3  from the Shihor east of Egypt, to the border of Ekron to the north (which is considered as Canaanite territory); the five rulers of the Philistines in Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron, and also the Avvites;  4  In the south, all the land of the Canaanites, from Mearah of the Sidonians as far as Aphek, to the border of the Amorites;  5  the land of the Gebalites, and all Lebanon to the east, from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo-hamath.

6“As for all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim and all the Sidonians, I Myself will drive them out from before the Israelites. Be sure to divide by lot for the Israelites as an inheritance, as I have commanded you.  7  Therefore, divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.”

Division of the Land East of the Jordan

8  With the other half of the tribe of Manasseh, the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance that Moses had given them across the Jordan to the east, just as Moses the servant of the Lord had given them:

9 From Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley, along the city in the middle of the valley, all the plateau of Medeba as far as Dibon,  10  all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, to the border of the Ammonites;  11  and Gilead, and the territory of the Geshurites and Maachathites, and all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salecah  12  that is, all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who had reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei, and was one of the last of the Rephaim.

Moses had struck them down and driven them out.  13  But the Israelites did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites. So the Geshurites and Maacathites still live among the Israelites to this day.

14  But to the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance; the offerings made to the Lord by fire, the God of Israel are their inheritance, as He promised them.

The Allotment for Reuben

15  Moses gave to the tribe of Reuben an inheritance according to their clans.

16  Their territory was from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley, along the city in the middle of the valley, and the whole plateau as far as Medeba,  17  Including Heshbon and all its cities that are on the plateau: Dibon, Bamoth-baal, Beth-baal-meon,  18  Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,  19  Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth-shahar on the hill in the valley,  20  Beth-peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth  21  all the cities on the plateau, and the whole kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon. Moses had killed him along with the chiefs of Midian: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the princes of Sihon who were living in the land.  22  The Israelites also killed with the sword Balaam son of Beor, who practiced divination.

23  The border of the Reubenites was the bank of the Jordan. This was the inheritance of the Reubenites according to their clans, with the cities and villages.

The Allotment for Gad

24  Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of Gad by their clans.

25  Their territory was Jazer, all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites as far as Aroer, near Rabbah;  26  and from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir;  27  and in the valley; Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphonthe rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, with the Jordan as a border, as far as the lower end of the Sea of Chinnereth on the east side of the Jordan.  28  This is the inheritance of the people of Gad by their clans, with the cities and their villages.

The Allotment for Manasseh East of the Jordan

29  Moses also gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh, that is, to half of the families of the descendants of Manasseh by their clans.

30  Their territory extended from Mahanaim including all of Bashan, all of the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the settlements of Jair that are in Bashan. There were sixty cities;  31  half of Gilead, and Ashtaroth and Edrei (the royal cities of Og in Bashan). These were allotted to the descendants of Machir son of Manasseh, that is, for half of the sons of Machir by their clans.

32  These are the territories that Moses had distributed as an inheritance in the plains of Moab, across the Jordan east of Jericho.  33  But Moses did not give an inheritance to the tribe of Levi. The Lord, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, as He had promised to them.
