are the areas that the Israelites inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the families of the tribes of Israel distributed to them. 2 Their inheritance was by lot for the nine and a half tribes, as the Lord had commanded through Moses. 3 For Moses had given the inheritance to the two and a half tribes across the Jordan; but to the Levites he had given no inheritance among them. 4 For the sons of Joseph had become two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. And no portion of the land was given to the Levites, except cities to dwell in, with pasturelands for their cattle and livestock. 5 So the Israelites did just as the Lord commanded Moses, and they divided the land.
6 Now the men of Judah went to Joshua in Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the Lord said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh-barnea about you and me. 7 I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought him back an honest report. 8 But my brothers who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt with fear; yet I remained completely loyal to the Lord my God. 9 So Moses swore an oath on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land where your feet have trodden will be your inheritance and your children’s forever, for you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly’.
10 “Now, as you see, the Lord has kept me alive these forty-five years as He promised, since the time that the Lord spoke this word to Moses, while Israel moved about through the wilderness. Now here I am today, eighty-five years! 11 I am still as strong today as I was on the day that Moses sent me. I am just as vigorous to go out to battle, and for my daily tasks and routines now as I was then. 12 Now give me this hill country that the Lord spoke on that day. You yourself heard on that day how the Anakim were there, and that the cities were large and fortified. Perhaps it may be that the Lord will be with me, then I will be able to drive them out as the Lord promised.”
13 Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron for an inheritance. 14 So Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb son of Jephunneh to this day, for he followed the Lord, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly. 15 The name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath-arba, (for Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim).
Then the land had rest from war.
