the whole Israelite community assembled together at Shiloh and set up the Tent of Meeting there; and the land had been subdued by them. 2 But there remained among the Israelites seven tribes who had not yet received their inheritance.
3 So Joshua said to the Israelites, “How long will you delay before you begin to take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers has given you? 4 Appoint for yourselves three men from each tribe. I will send them out to make a survey of the land, and write a description of it according to each one’s inheritance, and return to me. 5 Then they are to divide the land into seven portions. Judah will remain in their territory on the south, and the house of Joseph in their territory on the north. 6 You must write a description of the seven portions of land and bring them back here to me. Then I will cast lots for you in the presence of the Lord our God. 7 But the Levites among you do not get a portion, for the priesthood of the Lord is their inheritance. Gad, Reuben, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance across the Jordan to the east, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave them.
8 As the men started to leave to go and write a description of the land, Joshua said to them, “Go, walk through the land and survey it, and write a description of it. Then return to me, and I will cast lots for you here in the presence of the Lord at Shiloh.” 9 So the men left, passed through the land, and described it city be city in seven divisions in a document. Then they went back to Joshua at the camp in Shiloh. 10 Joshua cast lots for them at Shiloh in the presence of the Lord, and there he distributed the land to the Israelites according to their tribal divisions.
11 The first lot came out for the tribe of Benjamin by their clans. The territory allotted to them lay between the tribe of Judah and the tribe of Joseph.
12 Their border on the north side began at the Jordan, went up to the slope of Jericho on the north, then it went up through the hill country to the west, and ended at the wilderness at Beth-aven. 13 From there the border continued toward Luz, to the southern slope of Luz (that is, Bethel); then it went down to Ataroth-addar, on the hill south of Lower Beth-horon.
14 From the hill facing Beth-horon on the south, the border curved around and went south on the west side and ended at Kiriath-baal (that is Kiriath-jearim), a city of the tribe of Judah. This was the western side.
15 The southern side began at the outskirts of Kiriath-jearim, and the border extended westwards and went out to the spring of the Waters of Nephtoah. 16 Then the border went down to the foot of the hill facing the Valley of Ben-hinnom at the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim. It continued down the Valley of Hinnom to the southern side of the Jebusite city and downward to En-rogel. 17 It then curved around in a northerly direction and went to En-shemesh and on to Geliloth, which is opposite the ascent of Adummim, and ran down to the Stone of Bohan son of Reuben. 18 Then it went on to the north of the slope of Beth-arabah, and went down into the Arabah. 19 The border continued along to the north of the slope of Beth-hoglah and ended at the northern bay of the Salt Sea, at the south end of the Jordan. This was the southern boundary.
20 The Jordan formed the boundary on the eastern side.
This was the inheritance of the people of Benjamin by their clans, according to the boundaries on all sides.
21 These are the cities of the tribe of the people of Benjamin by their clans:
Jericho, Beth-hoglah, Emek-keziz, 22 Beth-arabah, Zemaraim, Bethel, 23 Avvim, Parah, Ophrah, 24 Chephar-ammoni, Ophni, and Geba—twelve cities, with their villages.
25 Gibeon, Ramah, Beeroth, 26 Mizpeh, Chephirah, Mozah, 27 Rekem, Irpeel, Taralah, 28 Zela, Haeleph, Jebus (that is, Jerusalem), Gibeah, and Kiriath—fourteen cities, with their villages.
