the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of His robe filled the temple. 2 Seraphim were standing above Him; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 One called to another and said:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Hosts;
the whole earth is full of His glory!”
4 At the sound of their voices the posts of the doorways and the thresholds were shaken and the temple was filled with smoke.
5 Then I said:
“Woe is me, for I am ruined!
For I am a man of unclean lips,
and I live among a people of unclean lips,
because my eyes have seen the King,
the Lord of Hosts.”
6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, holding a live coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar.
7 He touched my mouth with it and said:
“See, this has touched your lips;
your iniquity is removed,
and your sin is atoned for.”
8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying,
“Whom shall I send?
Who will go for Us?”
And I said, “Here I am. Send me!”
9 He said, “Go and say to this people:
‘Keep listening, but do not understand;
keep looking, but do not perceive’.
10 ‘Make the hearts of this people dull;
stop up their ears,
and shut their eyes!
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts,
and turn and be healed’.”
11 Then I said, “For how long, O Lord?”
And He answered:
“Until cities are laid waste
and without inhabitant,
the houses are without people,
the fields lie ruined and desolate,
12 until the Lord has sent everyone far away,
leaving vast emptiness in the midst of the land.
13 Though a tenth part remains in the land,
it will be burned again.
Like the terebinth tree or the oak,
whose stump remains when it is cut down,
so the holy seed shall be its stump.”
