with His unyielding sword,
great, and strong,
Leviathan the fleeing serpent,
Leviathan the twisting serpent.
He will slay the dragon of the sea.
2 On that day sing about a pleasant vineyard:
3 βI, the Lord, watch over it;
I water it regularly.
I guard it night and day
so that no one may harm it.
4I am not angry,
but if it gives Me only thorns and briers,
I will march into battle against it,
I will burn it to the ground.
5 Or let it take hold of My strength,
let it make peace with Meβ
make peace with Me.
6 βIn the days to come, Jacob will take root,
Israel will blossom and bloom,
and fill the whole world with fruit.β
7 Has the Lord struck Israel,
as He struck those who struck Israel?
Or has Israel been slain
as those who were slain by him?
8 By banishing them You struggled against them;
He removed them with His fierce blast,
as on the day of the east wind.
9 Therefore the iniquity of Jacob will be purged in this way,

When He makes all the stones of the altars
to be like crushed pieces of chalk,
no Asherah poles or incense altars
will be left standing.
10 For the fortified city will be deserted;
the settlement will be abandoned,
and forsaken like a wilderness;
the calves will graze there,
they will lie down there,
and strip bare its branches.
11 When its branches dry out, they will be broken off,
and women will come and make fires with them.
For this is a people without understanding;
therefore He who made them will not have mercy on them,
and He who formed them will show them no favour.
12 On that day the Lord will thresh, from the channel of the Euphrates to the Wadi of Egypt, and you, O Israelites, will be gathered one by one.
13 On that day a great trumpet will sound, and those who were perishing in the land of Assyria and those who were exiled in the land of Egypt will come and worship the Lord on the holy mountain at Jerusalem.
