The Book of Isaiah

Isaiah Chapter 48

Stubborn Israel

1“HEAR this, O house of Jacob,

you who are called by the name of Israel, and come from the line of Judah; who swear by the name of the Lord,
and invoke the God of Israel, but not in truth or righteousness. 2 For they name themselves after the holy city,
and lean on the God of Israel the Lord of Hosts is His name.

3 “I foretold the former things long ago,
they went forth from My mouth and I made them known; then I suddenly acted, and they came to pass. 4 For I knew that you were stubborn;
your neck was an iron sinew, and your forehead was bronze. 5 Therefore I declared them to you from long ago,
before they came to happened I announced them to you, so you could not say, ‘My idols did them;
my wooden image and my metal god commanded them’.

6 “You have heard these things;
now see them all. Will you not acknowledge them?

“From this time on I will tell you of new things,
of hidden things that you did not know. 7 They have been created now, and not long ago;
you have never heard of them before this day, lest you should say,
‘I already knew them!’ 8 You have never heard;
you have never known; from of old your ear has not been open. For I knew that you were very treacherous;
from the womb you were called a rebel.

9 “For My own name’s sake I will delay My wrath;
for the sake of My praise I will restrain it from you, so that I do not cut you off.
10 Behold, I have refined you, though not as silver;
I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. 11 For My own sake, for My own sake I do this;
for why should My name be defamed? I will not yield My glory to another.

Israel Will Be Set Free

12 “Listen to Me, O Jacob,
and Israel, whom I have called: I am He;
I am the first, I am also the last. 13 My own hand laid the foundation of the earth,
and My right hand has stretched out the heavens; when I summon them,
they all stand up together.

14 “All of you, assemble together and listen!
Who among you has declared these things? The Lord loves him;
He will carry out His purpose on Babylon, and His arm will be against the Chaldeans. 15 I, even I, have spoken;
yes, I have called him; I will bring him,
and he will succeed in his mission.

16 Come near Me and listen to this:
“I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it came to be, I was there.”

“Now the Lord God has sent me
through His Spirit.”

17 This is what the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, says:

“I am the Lord your God,
who teaches you for your own benefit, who leads you in the way that you should go. 18 If only you had paid attention to My commands,
then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea. 19 Your descendants would have been like the sand,
and the offspring of your body like the grains of sand; their name would never be cut off,
nor destroyed from before Me.”

20 Get out of Babylon,
flee from the Chaldeans! Announce this with a shout of joy,
proclaim this, send it out to the ends of the earth;
say, “The Lord has redeemed His servant Jacob!” 21 They did not thirst when He led them through the deserts;
He made water flow for them from the rock; He split open the rock,
and water gushed out.

22 “There is no peace,” declares the Lord,
“for the wicked.”
