The Book of Isaiah

Isaiah Chapter 60

The Glory of the Lord in Zion

1“ARISE, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.

2 Behold, darkness covers the earth,
and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you,
and His glory will appear over you. 3 Nations will come to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your dawn.

4 “Lift up your eyes and look about:
they have all gathered and come to you; your sons come from far away,
and your daughters are supported at your side. 5 Then you will look and be radiant,
and your heart will tremble with joy; because the wealth of the seas will be brought to you,
and the riches of the nations will come to you. 6 A multitude of camels will cover your land,
young camels from Midian and Ephah; and all those from Sheba will come. They will bring gold and frankincense
and proclaim the praises of the Lord. 7 All the flocks of Kedar will be gathered to you,
the rams of Nebaioth will serve you; they will go up and be accepted on My altar,
and I will add glory to My temple of glory.

8 “Who are these that fly like a cloud,
like doves to their shelters? 9 Surely the coastlands will wait for Me,
with the ships of Tarshish in the lead, to bring your sons from far away,
their silver and the gold with them, for the honour of the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, because He has glorified you.

10 “Foreigners will rebuild your walls,
and their kings will serve you. For in My wrath I struck you,
but in My favour I will have mercy on you. 11 Your gates will always remain open;
they will never be shut, day or night, so that men may bring to you the wealth of the nations,
with their kings led in triumphant procession. 12 For the nation and the kingdom that will not serve you will perish;
those nations will be totally ruined.

13 “The glory of Lebanon will come to you,
the cypress tree, the pine, and the box tree together to adorn the place of My sanctuary;
and I will glorify the place where My feet rest. 14 The sons of your oppressors will come and bow down to you;
all who despised you will bow down at your feet. They will call you the City of the Lord,
Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

15 “Although you have been forsaken and hated,
with no one passing through, I will make you an object of eternal excellence,
a joy from generation to generation. 16 You will nurse on the milk of nations,
and be nursed at the breast of kings; then you will know that I, the Lord, am your Saviour,
your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.

17 “Instead of bronze I will bring gold,
instead of iron I will bring silver, instead of wood, bronze,
and iron instead of stones. I will appoint peace as your governor,
and righteousness as your ruler. 18 Violence will no longer be heard in your land,
nor devastation and destruction from within your borders. But you will name your walls Salvation,
and your gates Praise.

The Lord, the Everlasting Light of Zion

19 “The sun will no longer be your light by day,
neither will the brightness of the moon shine upon you; but the Lord will be to you an everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory. 20 Your sun will no longer go down,
neither will your moon withdraw itself; but the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your days of sorrow will be ended. 21 Then all your people will be righteous;
they will possess the land forever. They are the shoot that I planted,
the work of My hands, so that I may be glorified. 22 The least of you will become a thousand,
the smallest a mighty nation. I am the Lord;
I will accomplish this swiftly in its time.”
