Psalm 31

A Plea for Protection

For the director of music. A Psalm of David.

1IN You, O Lord, I have taken refuge;
let me never be put to shame; deliver me in Your righteousness. 2 Incline Your ear to me;
rescue me quickly; be my rock of refuge,
a strong fortress to save me. 3 For You are my rock and my fortress;
for the sake of Your name lead me and guide me. 4 You free me from the net laid for me,
for You are my refuge. 5 Into Your hand I commit my spirit;
You redeem me, O Lord, the God of truth.   6 I hate those who esteem worthless idols;
I trust in the Lord. 7 I will be glad and rejoice in Your faithful love,
for You have seen my affliction; You have known the troubles of my soul. 8 You have not handed me over to the enemy,
You set my feet in a spacious place.   9 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in distress;
my eye are wasted by grief, my soul and my body also. 10 My life is consumed with sorrow,
and my years with sighing; my strength fails because of my iniquity,
and my bones waste away. 11 I am scorned by all my enemies,
and despised among my neighbours. I am a dread to my friends
those who see me in the street flee from me. 12 I am forgotten like a dead man, out of mind;
I have become like broken pottery. 13 For I hear the slander of many;
terror is on every side; they conspire together against me;
they scheme to take away my life.   14 But I trust in You, O Lord;
I say, “You are my God.” 15 My times are in Your hands;
deliver me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me. 16 Make Your face shine on Your servant;
save me for the sake of Your faithful love. 17 Let me not be put to shame, O Lord,
for I cried out to You. Let the wicked be put to shame;
let them be silent in Sheol. 18 Let lying lips be made silent;
for they speak arrogantly against the righteous with pride and contempt.   19 How great is Your goodness,
that You have laid up for those who fear You, and You bestow on those who take refuge in You,
in the sight of the sons of men! 20 You hide them in the shelter of Your presence
from the schemes of men; You keep them safe under Your shelter
from the strife of tongues.   21 Blessed be the Lord,
for He has shown me the wonders of His faithful love when I was in a besieged city. 22 I had said in my alarm,
“I am cut off from Your sight!” But You heard my plea for mercy
when I cried out to You.   23 Love the Lord, all you His saints.
For the Lord preserves the faithful, but He pays back the proud in full. 24 Be of good courage and He will strengthen Your heart,
all of you who hope in the Lord.
