1GIVE thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
His faithful love endures forever.
2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say this—
those whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy,
3 and has gathered from the lands,
from the east and the west,
from the north and the south.
4 Some wandered in wilderness wastelands,
finding no way to a city where they could settle.
5 Hungry and thirsty,
their soul fainted within them.
6 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
and He delivered them from their distress.
7 He led them by a straight way,
to a city where they could settle.
8 Let them give thanks to the Lord for His faithful love,
and His wonderful deeds for the sons of man!
9 For He satisfies the thirsty,
and fills the hungry with good things.
10 Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,
prisoners suffering in misery bound with chains,
11 for they had rebelled against the words of God,
and despised the counsel of the Most High.
12 Therefore He bowed down their hearts with bitter labour;
they fell down and there was no one to help.
13 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and He saved them from their distress.
14 He brought them out of darkness and deep gloom,
and broke their chains in pieces.
15 Let them give thanks to the Lord for His faithful love,
and His wonderful deeds for the sons of man!
16 For He has shattered gates of bronze,
and cut through iron bars.
17 Some were made fools by their rebellious ways,
and were afflicted because of their iniquities.
18 They loathed any kind of food,
and drew near the gates of death.
19 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
and He saved them out of their distress.
20 He sent forth His word and healed them,
and delivered them from their destruction.
21 Let them give thanks to the Lord for His faithful love,
and His wonderful deeds for the sons of man!
22 Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving,
and tell of His works with joyful singing.
23 Those who go out on the sea in ships,
and do business on the mighty waters,
24 they see the works of the Lord,
and His wonders in the deep.
25 For He commands and raises the stormy wind,
that lifts up the waves of the sea.
26 They mount up to the heavens, they go down again to the depths;
their courage melts away in their peril.
27 They reel and stagger like a drunken man,
and are at their wits’ end.
28 Then they cry to the Lord in their trouble,
and He brings them out of their distress.
29 He makes the storm to be still,
and the waves of the sea are hushed.
30 Then they are glad because they have quiet,
and He brings them to their desired haven.
31 Let them give thanks to the Lord for His faithful love,
and His wonderful deeds for the sons of man!
32 Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people,
and praise Him in the council of the elders.
33 He turns rivers into desert,
and springs of water into thirsty ground,
34 and fruitful land into a salty waste,
because of the wickedness of its inhabitants.
35 He turns the wilderness into pools of water,
and parched land into springs of water.
36 There He causes the hungry to dwell,
and they establish a city where they may live.
37 They sow the fields and plant vineyards
that yield a bountiful harvest.
38 He blesses them also, so they multiply greatly,
and He does not let their cattle decrease.
39 When they are diminished and brought low,
through oppression, calamity, and sorrow,
40 He pours contempt on princes,
and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland.
41 But he raises up the needy out of distress,
and increases their families like flocks.
42The upright see it and rejoice;
but all the unjust shut their mouths.
43 Whoever is wise and gives heed to these things,
they will discern the faithful love of the Lord.
