The Timelessness of God and the Frailty of Mortal Man

A Prayer of Moses, the man of God.

1Lord, You are our dwelling place
throughout all generations.

2 Before the mountains were brought forth,
or You had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God.   3 You turn man back to dust;
You say, “Go back to dust, O sons of man.” 4 For a thousand years in Your sight
are but as yesterday when it is past, or like a watch shift in the night. 5 You sweep men away and they are taken in the sleep of death.
They are like grass that grows in the morning 6 in the morning it sprouts and flourishes,
yet by evening it fades and withers.   7 For we are consumed by Your anger;
we are terrified by Your wrath. 8 You have set our iniquities before You,
our secret sins in the light of Your countenance. 9 For all our days pass away under Your wrath;
we finish our years like a sigh. 10 The days of our life are seventy years,
or perhaps by reason of strength, eighty years, yet their span is but trouble and sorrow,
for soon they have passed, and we fly away.   11 Who knows the power of Your anger?
For Your wrath is as great as the fear that is due You. 12 So teach us to number our days,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.   13 Relent, O Lord! How long?
Have compassion on Your servants. 14 Satisfy us in the morning with Your faithful love,
so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. 15 Make us glad as many days as You have afflicted us,
and for as many years as we have seen trouble. 16 Let Your works be shown to Your servants,
and Your glory to their children.   17 Let the beauty of the Lord our God rest upon us;
and establish for us the work of our hands; yes, establish the work of our hands.
