An Appeal for God’s Protection

For the director of music. To the tune of ‘A Dove on Distant Oaks’. A Miktam of David. When the Philistines seized him in Gath.

1HAVE mercy on me, O God, for men would trample me;
all day long my foes continue attacking.

2 My enemies pursue me all day long;
many in arrogance fight against me.   3 When I am afraid,
I will trust in You. 4 In God, whose word I praise,
in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?   5 All day long they twist my words;
all their thoughts are against me for evil. 6 They conspire together, they lurk;
they watch my steps, as they wait to take my life.   7 Do not let them get away with such iniquity;
in Your anger, O God, cast down the peoples! 8 You have recorded my wanderings;
store up my tears in Your flask are they not laid up in Your records?   9 Then my enemies will turn back
when I call to You for help. By this I know, that God is for me. 10 In God, whose word I praise,
in the Lord, whose word I praise. 11 In God I trust; I am not afraid.
What can man do to me?   12 My vows to You are upon me, O God,
I will present my thank offerings to You. 13 For You have delivered me from death,
and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God
in the light of life.
