1SAVE me, O God,
for the waters have come up to my neck.
2 I sink in deep mire,
and find no foothold.
I have come into deep waters,
where the flood sweeps over me.
3 I am weary from my crying;
my throat is parched.
My eyes fail
while I wait for my God.
4 Those who hate me without a reason
outnumber the hairs of my head;
many are my enemies without cause—
powerful foe who would destroy me.
Though I did not steal,
I am forced to restore.
5 O God, You know my folly;
my guilt is not hidden from You.
6 Do not let those who put their hope in You,
O Lord God of Hosts,
be disgraced because of me.
Do not let those who seek You
be put to shame because of me,
O God of Israel.
7 For Your sake I have endured reproach;
shame covers my face.
8 I am a stranger to my brothers,
a foreigner to my mother’s sons.
9 Zeal for Your house has consumed me;
the insults of those who insult You have fallen on me.
10 I mourn and chasten my soul with fasting,
but I am reviled for it.
11 I make sackcloth my clothing,
yet I have become a byword among them.
12 Those who sit at the gate speak against me;
I am the song of the drunkards.
13 But as for me, O Lord,
may my prayer come to You in a time of favour;
in the abundance of Your faithful love, O God,
answer me with Your sure salvation.
14 Rescue me from the mire,
do not let me sink;
let me be delivered from those who hate me,
and from the deep waters.
15 Do not let the floodwaters sweep over me;
or the deep swallow me up,
or the Pit close its mouth over me.
16 Answer me, O Lord,
for Your faithful love is good;
turn to Me in the abundance of Your tender mercy.
17 Do not hide Your face from Your servant;
for I am in trouble, answer me quickly.
18 Draw near to me and redeem me,
deliver me because of my enemies.
19 You know the insults I suffer,
and my shame and dishonour;
all my enemies are before You.
20 Scorn has broken my heart,
and I am left in despair;
I looked for some to take pity, but there was none;
for comforters, but I found none.
21 They gave me gall for food;
when I thirsted they gave me vinegar to drink.
22 Let the table set become them be a snare,
and their fellowship a trap.
23 Let their eyes be darkened so they cannot see;
make their backs to be bent and trembling continually.
24 Pour out Your indignation on them;
let Your fierce anger overtake them.
25 Let their camp be desolate;
let there be no one to dwell in their tents.
26 For they persecute those You have struck,
and talk of the grief of those You have wounded.
27 Add iniquity to their iniquity;
do not let them share in Your righteousness.
28 Let them be blotted out of the book of life,
and not be recorded with the righteous.
29 But I am poor and sorrowful;
let Your salvation, O God, protect me.
30 I will praise the name of God with a song,
and magnify Him with thanksgiving.
31 This will please the Lord more than an ox,
or a bull that has horns and hoofs.
32 The humble will see this and be glad;
you who seek God, may your hearts live!
33 For the Lord hears the needy,
and does not despise His captive people.
34 Let heaven and earth praise Him,
the seas and everything that moves in them,
35 for God will save Zion,
and rebuild the cities of Judah.
Then people will settle there and possess it;
36 the descendants of His servants will inherit it,
and those who love His name will dwell there.
