1LISTEN to my prayer, O God;
do not hide Yourself from my plea;
2 hear me and answer me.
I am restless in my complaint and distraught
3 at the words of the enemy,
because of the threats of the wicked;
for they bring disaster down upon me;
and they hate me in the fullness of their anger.
4 My heart is in anguish within me;
the terrors of death have fallen upon me.
5 Fear and trembling have come upon me;
horror has overwhelmed me.
6 I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!
I would fly away and be at rest.
7I would flee far away,
and find refuge in the wilderness. Selah
8I would hurry to my shelter,
far from the raging wind and storm.”
9 Confuse the wicked, O Lord, confound their speech,
for I see violence and strife in the city.
10 Day and night they prowl around on its walls;
crime and trouble are within it.
11 Ruin is in its midst;
oppression and deceit never leave its streets.
12 If it was an enemy insulting me,
then I could bear it;
if it was an adversary who rises up against me,
I could hide myself from him.
13 But it is you, a man my equal,
my companion, my good friend.
14 We used to enjoy sweet fellowship together,
as we walked with the throng in the house of God.
15 Let death seize upon them;
let them go down alive to Sheol;
for evil is in their dwellings and within them.
16 But I call to God,
and the Lord saves me.
17 Evening, morning, and noon I complain and groan,
and He hears my voice.
18 He delivers me unharmed
from the battle waged against me,
though many oppose me.
19 God, who is enthroned forever,
will hear, and afflict them. Selah
These men never change,
and they do not have the fear of God within.
20 My companion attacks his allies;
he violates his covenant.
21 His words are smoother than butter,
but war is in his heart;
his words are more soothing than oil,
yet they are drawn swords.
22 Cast your burden on the Lord,
and He will sustain you;
He will never suffer the righteous to be shaken.
23 But You, O God, will cast them down
into the pit of destruction;
bloodthirsty and treacherous men
will not live out half their days.
But as for me, I trust in You.
