A Prayer for Victory after Defeat

For the director of music. Set to the tune of ‘Lily of the Covenant’. A Miktam of David; for instruction. When he fought with Aram-naharaim and Aram-zobah, and Joab returned and killed twelve thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.

1God, You have rejected us, You have scattered us;
You have been angry, now restore us!

2 You have shaken the land and torn it open.
Repair its fissures, for it is quaking. 3 You have made Your people suffer hardship;
You have had us drink a wine that made us reel.   4 But You have raised a banner for those who fear You,
to be unfurled safe from the archer’s bow.  Selah   5 Save with Your right hand and help us,
so those You love may be delivered. 6 God has spoken from His holiness,
“In triumph I will divide up Shechem, and portion out the Valley of Succoth. 7 Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine;
Ephraim is My helmet; Judah is My sceptre. 8 Moab is My washbasin;
over Edom I toss My sandal; over Philistia I shout in triumph.”   9 Who will bring me to the fortified city?
Who will lead me to Edom? 10 Is it not You, O God, who has rejected us?
For You, O God, no longer go out with our armies. 11 Grant us help against the enemy,
for the help of man is worthless. 12 With God we will do valiantly,
for He who will trample down our enemies.
